You'll see this screen while the app is loading.
Select a habitat
Once you open the app, you'll see a page with six different habitat buttons. Click on one to start a bird walk.
Welcome to the bay!
You have selected the bay habitat. Click "Start walking" to begin your bird walk.
You've heard a bird!
Listen to the sound and read the description to see if you can figure out what bird you're hearing.
You've seen a bird!
Look at the image, read the description, and try to figure out what bird you saw. The app will tell you whether your identification is correct.
Birder's notebook
Once you've finished your walk, your birder's notebook will appear. Here, you can see a list of all the birds you saw on your walk. Click on a bird name to learn more about it.
Bay Area birds list
Click the middle tab at the bottom of the screen (labeled "Birds") to see a list of all the birds currently listed on the app. Click a bird to see its info page.
European Starling info page
This is the info page for the European Starling. This particular page has 2 photos, 2 audio recordings, a poem, and a quick birding tip.
Select a quiz
Once you're feeling up for it, take a quiz to test your knowledge. Choose from four different types of quizzes — easy, medium, hard, and sound-only.
Quiz question
Here's what a question for an easy, medium, or hard quiz looks like. You'll see a photo and a sound (if applicable) and four bird names to choose from.
Sound-only quiz question
If you really want a challenge, try out the sound-only quiz. You can play a sound and try to guess the bird without seeing it.
Quiz score
Once you've finished a quiz, you'll receive a score. Enjoy!
